Phantom Rhythm, the debut full-length from Beijing-based “transnational blues” duo Gong Gong Gong, is out now!  I am so proud of this record, and ecstatic to see it out in the world – we began recording the album at Seaside Lounge in October 2017 (the same sessions that yielded the Siren single), and finished mixing earlier this year at Studio Windows.  In the meantime, they’ve toured with Parquet Courts, Flasher, and Bodega in the US, Europe, and China, and made fans worldwide.  Just read the press:

“An alarmingly stripped-down form of hypnotic rock which spiritually evokes the blues as well as punk, but otherwise can’t be directly compared to any other genre or artist” – Allmusic

“An album of avant-rock, unpretentious high art” – Pop Bollocks

“Ambassadors of the worldwide underground through a thoughtful collection of haunting barebones punk” – Post Trash

8/10: “Fearsome psych rock by the slightest means” – Loud & Quiet

Working with the group and producing these recordings has been a highlight of my career.  Stream the album in full, pickup a copy on LP or CD, and do not miss them live!  Phantom Rhythm is out now on Wharf Cat Records.

NYC noise-rock duo ESSi have released their debut LP Vital Creatures, and it’s a doozy.  I produced the album with the group, recording at Thump Studios and mixing/mastering at Studio Windows last year.  It’s wonderful to have such glowing feedback in the press, not just about the record itself (“quite simply one of the best albums of the year” – Tone Shift, “brooding but also enveloping” – Post Trash, “the real joy of this record lies in [their] fearless playing with tone, texture, and form” – Echoes and Dust), but also the kind words of recognition for my role in the process.  It IS an exciting sounding record, and I highly recommend you stream it below, go see them live, and pick up an LP pronto.  Vital Creatures is out now on Ramp Local.

Brooklyn-based noise-rock combo Weeping Icon just dropped their self-titled full-length album.  Pitchfork called the songs “noisy punk thrashers that are clever, incisive, and frequently very funny” in their very positive review, and the group had great press also in Kerrang, Bandcamp Daily, Stereogum, AdHoc, and others.  Ben Greenberg recorded and mixed the record, and I assembled and mastered it with the group at Studio Windows.  Dig in above, below, and beyondWeeping Icon is out now on Fire Talk.

NYC’s alterna-punk quartet Desert Sharks have released their debut LP Baby’s Gold Death StadiumThe Talkhouse premiered the album alongside an interview last week, and there’s a bunch of other great press via Northern Transmissions, Vents, MXDWN, and more.  The group recorded the album with Jordan Lovelace (of my faves Brandy) and I mixed/mastered it at Studio Windows.  Check out the press above, stream the record below, and head over to their Bandcamp to pick up your own copy.  Baby’s Gold Death Stadium is out now on Substitute Scene Records.

“Ride Your Horse” is the newest single from Beijing “transnational blues” guitar/bass duo Gong Gong Gong’s upcoming album Phantom Rhythm.   NPR premiered the track, writing “Depending on your ear, the Beijing-based guitar-and-bass duo could sound like The Feelies‘ stuttering post-punk, Bo Diddley‘s rock and roll boogie or Tinariwen‘s droning desert blues. But this unplaceable sound and drummer-less format encourages Gong Gong Gong’s reckless and razor-sharp rhythms to reshape rock and roll.”  Paste, Pop Bollocks, and Raven Sings the Blues all had words to say about it too, and Aquarium Drunkard interviewed the band from Beijing.  I produced Phantom Rhythm with the group in NYC, recording at Seaside Lounge and mixing at Studio Windows.  Phantom Rhythm is out October 4 via Wharf Cat Records – stream the video (directed by bassist Joshua Frank) and pre-order the album now!

NYC synth-rockers Operator Music Band are back with their new album Duo Duo.  I’ve mixed the band’s past couple (excellent) releases (Puzzlephonics and Coordination), and this is my favorite work that we’ve done yet.  Don’t take my word for it – both Gold Flake Paint and Pop Bollocks both wrote glowing reviews: “Flamboyant, buzzing with energy, it’s a beautiful piece of art-pop, mirroring the spread of colours found across the album’s imagery. Meticulously produced, the record succeeds in that rare triumph of feeling both freely loose and exquisitely sequenced, able to follow-up regimented beats with a burst of shiny exuberance; a sudden burst of firework against a grey and plaintive sky.” I helped with production and recording (alongside Henry Terepka, Lorenzo Wolff, and the band) and mixed the record at Studio Windows.  Duo Duo is out now on Broken Circles – pick up a copy and stream below!

October Song, the sophomore album by otherworldly pop trio Lightning Bug, is out now.  I’ve been a fan since they came into the studio to master their debut Floaters (NME’s #4 Best Debuts of 2015), and was thrilled to master this one too.  Simultaneously stranger and more ethereal than their debut, October Song still packs some beautiful melodies and a powerful punch.  The new album has already received some similar accolades, with an 8.0 on Pitchfork (“gorgeous and hypnotic”) and a full-album debut on Hype Machine.  Stream it below, or head over to their Bandcamp to download this and their other fabulous releases.  October Song is out now on Marbled Arm Records.

NYC electronic-rock quartet Operator Music Band return with “Rex”, the newest single (and one of my personal favorites) from their upcoming LP Duo Duo.  I co-produced (with Henry Terepka of Zula), co-recorded (with Lorenzo Wolff and the band) and mixed the record at Studio Windows.  Fun Fact: the cover sculpture was designed and built by my Eaters collaborator Christopher Duffy!  Listen to “Rex” below, along with their previous singles “Mondo” and “Slim Spin”.  Duo Duo is out October 4 via Broken Circles.
