NYC punk freakazoids Surfbort are back with a new EP called ‘You Don’t Exist’!  These four raucous blasts of songs are from the same sessions as Friendship Music, recorded at Thump and mixed/mastered by me at Studio Windows.  The band has toured constantly over the past year, recently appeared as stars of a new campaign from Gucci, and were featured in The Guardian leading up to the UK release of Friendship Music.  Pick up a copy of the limited-edition 10″ via Modern Sky, stream or buy it on Bandcamp, and don’t miss them next time they’re in your town!

Brooklyn-based bedroom pop trio Poppies released their newest EP Bed Music on Valentine’s Day.  This collection of fragile yet assertive tunes was recorded at Business District Recording upstate by Hunter Davidsohn, and I mixed/mastered it at Studio Windows.  AdHoc called the mini-album “one of the better things that happened this month” in their track-by-track review and Ears to Feed gives the EP a suitably heartfelt review as well.  Poppies play at Pianos for New Colossus Festival and open for Pinegrove at House of Independents in Asbury Park – definitely worth seeing!  You can stream and download Bed Music through the group’s Bandcamp, and Danger Collective Records are releasing the cassette this spring.

Rough Trade Records have premiered “Suddenly”, the new single from Tazmanian punks A. Swayze & The Ghosts.  I mixed/mastered this banger last year at Studio Windows, and mastered the extended freakout of a b-side called “Reciprocation”.  The band has already caught Australian’s attention, and they’re preparing to hit the UK for The Great Escape as I’ll be mixing their debut full length in March.  Check out the video above, and head over to Rough Trade to pre-order your LP.

NYC longtime-weirdos Ice Balloons have a new 7″ single: “Bicky Do Down” b/w “Body in the Park”.  I recorded these tracks with the group – which features members of TV on the Radio, Samiam, and Surfbort – at Seaside Lounge during the sessions for their last LP Fiesta, and mixed/mastered them later at Studio Windows.  We’re celebrating the occasion tonight at Coney Island Baby, where I’ll be performing a microtonal drone set with my group Eaters.  Pick up a copy there or from their Bandcamp page, and stream it below.

NYC fuzz-buckets The Men have released a new compilation of their earliest recordings, called Hated: 2008-2011. I mastered this double-LP comp – which collects material from demos, splits, and live tracks through their debut Immaculada -at Studio Windows, amassed from old hard drives and spray-painted cassettes.  Pitchfork ran an enthusiastic review, positing that “as Hated proves, even when the Men were blowing out eardrums and PAs in the dingiest DIY dives back in the late 2000s, they were already fueled by a restless spirit and striving for an emotional connection that could cut through the noise”.  Hated: 2008-2011 is out now on Sacred Bones Records.

Beijing-based “transnational blues” duo Gong Gong Gong have released their newest 7″ “Siren” b/w “Something’s Happening”. I produced this single (along with their upcoming full-length record), recording at October 2017 at Seaside Lounge and Doctor Wu’s, and mixed/mastered at Studio Windows this spring.  The duo recently wrapped up a tour with Parquet Courts, will be touring with Flasher and Public Practice this winter, and with Bodega in February 2019.  If you haven’t already, check out the amazing video for “Siren” below, and pick up their single now via Wharf Cat Records.

Friendship Music, the debut LP from NYC weirdo-thrashers Surfbort is out now via Cult Records/Fat Possum.  I co-produced/recorded/mixed/mastered this album at Thump and Studio Windows – with the exception of “Slushy” (recorded/mixed by Jonathan Krenik) and “Les Be In Love” (recorded/mixed by Chad Ubovich) – and it’s a blast of fun and noise that seeks to harness the mania of their live shows.  Surfbort is currently on tour across the USA with Black Lips and Iceage, before heading to Australia and Europe next month.  Pick up a copy when they stop through your city, and stream the record in its entirety below.

NYC-bred punk/metal/country/psych-rockers The Men have announced Hated: 2008-2011, out November 9 via Sacred Bones.  This compilation of their earliest work, ranging from their earliest demo through their proper debut Immaculada, touches upon much of the stylistic ground they would explore in more depth over the intervening years.  I transferred a plastic bag full of hand-dubbed cassettes, restored what I could, and remastered the collection at Studio Windows.  Read more about it on Consequence of Sound, and check out the 16mm video for “Ailment” below.
