NYC noise-punks turned industrial-rivetheads Pop. 1280 are back with a new single, new LP, and new label! Stereogum premiered “Noncompliant”, the first single from Museum On The Horizon – an album that continues the metamorphosis from rock into electronic sounds. I co-produced, recorded, and mixed the record with the group at Studio Windows over the winter…. it was one of my first in-person sessions after having to work remotely last year, and we fully dug into the studio process. Every drum machine and synth were synced – resulting in happy accidents and completely bizarre sounds – and we experimented heavily with processing (guitars through synths, synths through amps, everything through something else), resulting in something that feels very LIVE while leaning into the beats & grooves. Josh Bonati mastered Museum On The Horizon, which comes out September 24 via Profound Lore. Check out “Noncompliant” below, and order a copy on Bandcamp!

DC-based off-kilter punk trio BRNDA just released “Perfect World”, the first single from their upcoming album Do You Like Salt? FLOOD Magazine premiered the track, calling it “a throbbing, slice of motorik post-punk that… manages to marry quirk and danceability.” The album was recorded at White Oak Studios in Washington, DC by Justin Moyer, and I mixed & mastered it last year at Studio Windows. Check out the song below, and you can pre-order the LP on their Bandcamp. Do You Like Salt? is out August 20 via Crafted Sounds.

“Big Appetite” is the newest single from surrealist electronic-rock project Liars and their upcoming tenth album The Apple Drop. The single and its whirling video was featured in Rolling Stone, NME, Stereogum and more. This is one of my favorite songs on the record – more “rock” than their previous few records, but still in the grandiose sci-fi world-building of this new album – and one of the most time-consuming to “get right” in the mix… but I enjoyed every minute of it. The Apple Drop was recorded at Oceanic Studio with Laurence Pike and Cameron Dyell, and at home by Angus Andrew; I mixed and offered additional production for the record at Studio Windows, and it was mastered by Lachlan Carrick at Moose Mastering. The Apple Drop is out August 6 via Mute Records.

Louisville-based weirdo-pop trio Wombo released their newest Keesh Mountain EP today. Check out this feature on Ears To Feed, track reviews on Post Trash (“one of the more exciting new bands we’ve come across this year”) and Alt Citizen, and videos below. I mixed two songs – lead single “Dreamsickle” and “Just Like Time” – and mastered all four earlier this year at Studio Windows. Keesh Mountain is out now digitally and on cassette courtesy of Fire Talk Records.

Liars are back with “Sekwar”, the first single from their upcoming album The Apple Drop. The track premiered on Marc Riley’s BBC6 Radio show, and was featured across Pitchfork, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, NME and more. I had the pleasure of meeting Angus through his remix of P.E.’s “Top Ticket” and our Talkhouse interview, and our communications continued onto pandemic-era home-recording tips, production ideas, and eventually mixing. The Apple Drop was recorded at Oceanic Studio with Laurence Pike and Cameron Dyell, and at home by Angus Andrew; I mixed the record at Studio Windows, and it was mastered by Lachlan Carrick at Moose Mastering. I may be biased, but as a long-time fan of the group, I can say that y’all are in for a treat with this one! Check out “Sekwar” below, and head over to Mute’s shop to see the wide array of wares available around the release. The Apple Drop is out August 6 via Mute Records.

Louisville weirdo-pop trio Wombo have released their newest single “Dreamsickle”. The song (and its accompanying video) premiered on Austin Town Hall, and is from their upcoming EP Keesh Mountain. I mixed “Dreamsickle” and “Just Like Time” this winter, and mastered the full EP at Studio Windows. Keesh Mountain is out May 28th courtesy of Fire Talk Records – head over to Bandcamp to pre-order the limited-edition cassette, and check out the “Dreamsickle” video above.

Before Sunrise – the debut LP from bedroom dream-pop artist Nana Yamato – is out now via Dull Tools & Big Love RecordsPitchfork gave the record a glowing review (“lonely, glowing bedroom pop that relishes in the ecstatic possibilities of sound”), and Nylon interviewed Nana prior to the LP’s release.  I produced this record with Nana last year during lockdown – working on sounds & arrangements, adding synths & percussion – and mixed/mastered it at Studio Windows.  The songs and the escape it gave me from the pandemic are truly special to me, and it’s a thrill to see so many people responding so well to the record.  Check out the videos below, and head over to Bandcamp to order the LP.

“Do You Wanna” – the latest single from Japanese bedroom dream-pop singer/songwriter Nana Yamato – premiered on NPR’s All Songs Considered, along with a handmade video by Nana.  I produced this record with Nana last year during the earliest days of lockdown, and making this record together created a beautiful escape into another world.  Before Sunrise was mixed and mastered at Studio Windows, and is out February 5th via Big Love Records (Tokyo) and Dull Tools (NYC).  You can pre-order it now on Bandcamp.

Fans of Craig Leon and Harmonia take note: Thomas Seeley – a fixture of the Brooklyn music scene with his band Sleepies – recently released the 2020 EP.  We mixed & mastered this together at Studio Windows during the fall, experimenting with various real-time effects to bring these compositions to life.  It’s a transportive listen, and was a pleasure to work on – check out the 2020 EP below and head over to Thomas’ Bandcamp page for downloads.

Jason Kelly – former drummer & songwriter of such genre-bending groups as Fergus & Geronimo and Future Punx – returns with the new song “Letting Go Again”.  Written, recorded, and performed entirely alone, the skewed & dexterous electronic-pop of “Letting Go Again” evokes feelings of McCartney II, John Maus, and R. Stevie Moore.  I mixed the song this fall at Studio Windows, and Mark Yoshizumi mastered it.  It brings me great joy to hear Jason’s new work – he is a dear friend (one of the first I made in NYC) and his musicality lifts any composition to which he contributes.  I hope this is the first of many he’ll be sharing with us!  “Letting Go Again” is available now on Bandcamp.
