Gentle Grip – the debut album from NYC dance-punk quartet Public Practice – is streaming now on all platforms.  Consisting of members of WALL and Beverly, I’ve known each of the members for years, and have been a fan of the band since their very first show; I’m extremely proud of the work we did here.  I co-produced/-recorded half of the record with the band and mixed those songs at Studio Windows, which include the singles “Compromised” (currently on BBC Radio 6’s A List), “Disposable”, and “My Head”, plus “Cities”, “Underneath” (my personal favorite), and “Understanding”.  The remainder of the songs were recorded and mixed by the band and Jeff Berner, and the album was mastered by the always-excellent Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound.  The press has been fantastic – 4-stars on NME and DIY, Album Of The Day on BBC Radio 6, Album Of The Week on BrooklynVegan, and a glowing review in TrebleGentle Grip is available now digitally, and LPs/CDs will be available on June 26 via Wharf Cat Records.

Dougie Poole – NYC’s outsider country troubadour – has a brand new single called “Los Angeles”.  This is my favorite song from the upcoming record The Freelancer’s Blues – beautiful melodies, an elegant arrangement full of Dougie Poole-isms, and lyrics to which any New Yorker can relate.  I produced and recorded The Freelancer’s Blues with Dougie at Studio Windows, where I also mixed it; Carl Saff mastered the record in Chicago.  You can read more about the song on Ears To Feed, Recommended Listen, and Brooklyn Vegan; stream it below, watch the video, and pre-order on Bandcamp.  The Freelancer’s Blues comes out June 12 on Wharf Cat Records.

Public Practice – the NYC dance-punk quartet featuring members of WALL and Beverly – return with a new single from their debut full-length Gentle Grip.  “My Head” – which premiered on Stereogum – is a disco-rooted earworm, and features a video by Studio JojoBrooklyn Vegan also featured the track, along with music/book recommendations from the band.  “My Head” is one of the songs I co-produced/recorded and mixed on Gentle Grip, and of my favorite songs on the album (which was mastered by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound).  Check it out now, and pre-order the album, which comes out May 15 (digital)/June 26 (physical) via Wharf Cat Records.

NYC country weirdo Dougie Poole is back with the brand-new single “Vaping On The Job,” which premiered today on The FADER.  It’s the first puff of his upcoming sophomore LP The Freelancer’s Blues, which I produced/recorded/mixed at Studio Windows in Brooklyn.  Dougie and I conceived of doing a record like this – more band-oriented and relatively “hi-fi” but keeping all of the “Dougie Poolisms” intact – shortly after completing mixing for his debut Wideass Highway.  It was a long road from conception to completion, but the hard work shines across the album, from the earnest-yet-hilarious lyrics and spirited performances, to the intricate and other-worldly arrangements, to the final mix & presentation.  I’m truly proud of this record, and thrilled to be able to share a bit of it today!

The Freelancer’s Blues is out June 12 via Wharf Cat Records (home of Gong Gong Gong, Public Practice, P.E. and other family faves).  Check out the song & article on the FADER, and take some time to revisit Wideass Highway while you’re at it – “Don’t You Think I’m Funny Anymore” is a stone-cold classic.

It is a supreme pleasure to have Person, the debut LP from my group P.E., out in the world!  I loved putting together this record with my band mates and how the band has evolved since – genuinely one of the most fun and liberating creative experiences of my career – and it’s humbling to receive such praise for something so out there.

Person was Treble’s Album of the Week and a Bandcamp ‘Essential Release’ of the week.  Loud and Quiet featured both an incredibly insightful article by Isabel Crabtree and an 8/10 review.  Finn of Popbollocks wrote a touching review of the record, praising not only the music but also my personal production/mix work.  Bill Pearis shared our bonus mixtape Sick, Sad, Fun! (a collection of live takes/out-takes/new ideas available with the special edition of the record) on Brooklyn Vegan and put Person is his Indie Basement weekly roundup of notable records.  The group also hung out with Lola Pistola for an afternoon, got some great photographs, and a lovely feature in Alt Citizen.

P.E. is playing our record release show tonight at Trans Pecos before heading down to SXSW in a couple weeks.  We’re also doing two tours in the northeast this May – one with Pottery, and the other with Parquet Courts.  Check out the dates below, stream the record on a platform of your choosing, and order the special edition while their are still tapes available!  Person is out now on Wharf Cat Records.

My group P.E. (featuring members of Pill & Eaters) has released our latest single “Soft Dance.”  Stereogum calls it “a beguiling slow shuffle filled with horns and little guitar licks that make up something that has a lot of empty space but also never stops moving. It might not inspire dancing, but it might inspire the sort of introspective light you can find on a dance floor;” BrooklynVegan and Ears to Feed picked up the song as well.  I also participated in a Talkhouse interview with Angus Andrew from Liars (one of my favorite groups of the last couple decades) and my bandmate Jon Campolo (who also makes all of the artwork for P.E.) – it was so fun to talk about sound together!  “Soft Dance” is from P.E.’s debut album Person, out March 6 via Wharf Cat Records.

P.E. – my new group with members of Pill and Eaters – has released our first single “Top Ticket”, featuring a remix by LiarsStereogum premiered the track, BrooklynVegan called the group “a veritable sonic Reese’s Cup”, while Ears To Feed and Pop Bollocks wrote more in-depth track reviews.  “Top Ticket” is the first taste of our debut LP Person, which is due March 6 on Wharf Cat Records.  The album was produced at Studio Windows, edited and arranged from live improvisations with the group, and mixed/mastered by myself.  You can stream the tracks below, and pre-order Person on Wharf Cat’s site, the Special-Edition of which includes the bonus cassette Sick, Sad, Fun!

The love for Gong Gong Gong continues!  Pitchfork wrote a great review of Phantom Rhythm, awarding it a 7.6, calling it “a novel pastiche of post-punk, West African blues, Bo Diddley, and distortion” and referencing its “crisp production” (thank you).  Bandcamp Daily published a wonderfully in-depth feature the same day, tracing the band’s formation in Beijing’s underground music scene and the cross-pollination of cultural ideas.  Both great reads!  Check them out while you stream the record… Phantom Rhythm is out now on Wharf Cat Records.

New York City new-wave/post-punk quartet Public Practice are back with two new songs!  “Disposable”, the ripping A-side of this digital single, recently premiered on BBC Radio 1.  The B-side is a cover of “Extra-Ordinary” by Yukihiro Takaishi (of Yellow Magic Orchestra), and features Ben Jaffe (of Pill & P.E.) on sax.  I produced these songs with the band, recording/mixing/mastering at their space and Studio Windows earlier this year.  Check out the feature on Stereogum and stream below!  “Disposable” b/w “Extra-Ordinary” is out now via Wharf Cat Records.

Phantom Rhythm, the debut full-length from Beijing-based “transnational blues” duo Gong Gong Gong, is out now!  I am so proud of this record, and ecstatic to see it out in the world – we began recording the album at Seaside Lounge in October 2017 (the same sessions that yielded the Siren single), and finished mixing earlier this year at Studio Windows.  In the meantime, they’ve toured with Parquet Courts, Flasher, and Bodega in the US, Europe, and China, and made fans worldwide.  Just read the press:

“An alarmingly stripped-down form of hypnotic rock which spiritually evokes the blues as well as punk, but otherwise can’t be directly compared to any other genre or artist” – Allmusic

“An album of avant-rock, unpretentious high art” – Pop Bollocks

“Ambassadors of the worldwide underground through a thoughtful collection of haunting barebones punk” – Post Trash

8/10: “Fearsome psych rock by the slightest means” – Loud & Quiet

Working with the group and producing these recordings has been a highlight of my career.  Stream the album in full, pickup a copy on LP or CD, and do not miss them live!  Phantom Rhythm is out now on Wharf Cat Records.
