My group P.E. returns with NOPE Tapes Vol. 3, the latest (and last?) of our series of mixtapes. When we started talking last year about the series, I always pictured something like this as the goal… studio outtakes, sonic experiments, and rehearsal cut-ups stitched together into a singular psychedelic listening experience. It features contributions from A. Savage (whose new LP also comes out today), Andrya Ambro (Gold Dime), and Dan Friel (Upper Wilds) alongside the full P.E. crew. In many ways, it feels like the truest representation of the group in all its beautiful freaky forms. If you like our other albums, you’ll like this tape too. And if you like our other mixtapes (Sick Sad Fun included), you’ll LOVE this one! NOPE Tapes Vol. 3 is available now on limited-edition lime green cassette & digital.

“Wicked Animal” by actress/musician Amandla Stenberg is out now. The song – “a moody, gothed-out synthpop track” according to Stereogum – is from the new horror/romance film My Animal starring Stenberg, written by Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher, and directed by Jacqueline Castel. The track was produced & performed by Stenberg, and I mastered it at Studio Windows. “Take-Out Menu” is the newest single by Maxband (featuring members of Parquet Courts and A Beacon School). It comes from a batch of songs that we recorded earlier this year at Living Rooms and mixed at Studio Windows, and was mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring). This song hits the same poppy/punky sweet spots that their first two EPs did, but the album goes off into many stranger & darker places than this – hopefully we’ll get to hear more from it soon! “Take-Out Menu” is out now.

Gift Horse – my new project with Matthew Hord (Pop. 1280, Fine Place, Running) – has released our debut album Cultural Payout. Written & recorded across 2022 at Studio Windows, the album dives deep into leftfield beats and hardware electronics across the span of six sprawling songs. Electronica.org describes it as “an enigmatic journey through hallucinatory landscapes”, and Brooklyn Vegan writes the songs mix “rolling hip hop beats with Morricone-esque cinematic vistas”. I’ve know Matthew for around 15 years, our bands have shared bills together many times, and I’ve produced records for multiple projects he’s been in, but this is the first time we’ve made music together. Like many of my favorite records, this one was made without preconceptions and simply for the sake of playing music together. Our record release show will be October 6 at Union Pool, with James K and Auscultation (aka Golden Donna). P.E. is back with NOPE Tapes Vol. 3! The newest mixtape was announced with the first single “SPLASH!!” – which was featured on Treble Zine (“at once danceable and abstract, a further exploration of the group’s pursuit of genreless shapes and improvisational funk creations”) and Brooklyn Vegan – and comprises studio outtakes, field recordings & sound experiments, and rehearsal cutups. I know I’m biased, but we feel this release rivals our “proper” releases Person and The Leather Lemon! NOPE Tapes Vol. 3 will be out Oct 6 on limited-edition cassette & digital via Wharf Cat Records – pre-order your copy now!

A. Savage of Parquet Courts has announced his upcoming sophomore solo LP Several Songs About Fire. The single “Elvis In The Army” was featured on Pitchfork, Stereogum, The FADER and many others, and comes on the heels of last month’s song “Thanksgiving Prayer”. The album was produced by John Parish in Bristol, UK, and features contributions from Jack Cooper (Modern Nature, Ultimate Painting) and members of Cate Le Bon’s band and Caroline. I recorded the vocals for “Elvis In The Army” at Studio Windows, along with additional vocals & guitars for various songs on the record. Several Songs About Fire is out October 6 on Rough Trade Recordings.

Big Bliss – the NYC-based melodic post-punk outfit – is back with Vital Return. After singles featured on Stereogum, FLOOD Magazine, and Under The Radar, plus a feature in NYS Music, their sophomore record is out now on Good Eye Records. This album was years in the making – started and then delayed by the COVID lockdown – and delves deep into loss, addiction, and societal ills with a blend of new-wave punk grooves and intimately catchy melodies. I produced & recorded the record with lead-singer/guitarist Tim Race – at Figure 8 Recording, Light Show Studios, and BBHQ – and I mixed it at Studio Windows; Sarah Register mastered the album in full. Vital Return is out now via Good Eye Records.

NYC punks The Muckers are back with the new single “Suffocation”. The track aired on BBC6 ahead of their upcoming UK tour, and is the first taste of their new batch of songs, leaning more heavily on noise and groove. The track was recorded by Lucas Carpenter (Studio Windows’ former assistant) at Diamond Mine Recording, and I mixed & mastered it at Studio Windows. “Highway Nightmare” is the first single from singer-songwriter Adam Lytle and his album This Is The Fire. Adam previously led Quicksilver Daydream and Wild Leaves (both of whom I also worked with), and this marks his solo debut. Adam produced the album and recorded much of it himself, with Trey Pollard (of Spacebomb fame) providing string arrangements and Ryan Jewell holding down drums & percussion; I mixed & mastered the record at Studio Windows. The album is beautiful and haunting – with dramatic strings and a mix of acoustic & electric instrumentation – and I’m impressed with the work done by Adam & his crew. Check out the single now; This Is The Fire comes out October 20.

Gift Horse is a new project between me and Matthew Hord (Pop 1280, Running, Fine Place, Brandy), and we’ve released our first single “Devised Program”. After opening for Bitchin’ Bajas last year, we finished our debut record Cultural Payout. The album came from electronic hardware jam sessions at Studio Windows, which we then shaped & refined before I mixed & mastered it earlier this year. We have two shows next week with Chicago’s Mute Duo (American Dreams) – 7/12 at Tubby’s in Kingston and 7/13 at The P.I.T. in Brooklyn. Cultural Payout is out September 1 on cassette and digital via Ryley Walker’s label Husky Pants.
